CHAPTER TWENTY

Jean Melrose sat back in the taxi and had to admit that she missed Andy already. Then the anger kicked in when she remembered what he had done. You're the one who was working with Robert Molloy! They had both done something behind the other's back, but she tried to convince herself that what she had done was the best for her. It had been the best for her business.

Years ago, her husband had walked out, leaving her high and dry. She had a little girl to feed, and instead of going on government handouts, she had fought her way back. She had built up her business and was successful.

Meeting Andy Watt online had been fun. She'd been at a low point in her life, and he was handsome and funny and good company.

Then she had been invited to dinner by her old friend, Robert Molloy. He had made her a proposal; liaise with Rick Dempsey and he would see to it that she would have the contract as interior designer for the places he was buying and refurbishing, or having built from scratch.

Too many nights lying awake, wondering if her business was going to survive, made her jump at the chance. And she had made a small fortune from Molloy.

And of course, she had kept her end of the bargain. George Stone would not have been a happy camper if he had known that Dempsey was feeding information to Molloy via her.

She got the taxi driver to drop her off round the corner from her house, in Pentland Avenue. She wanted to see if Andy was hanging about, waiting to see if he could persuade her to let him back. Let's sit down and talk. That's what her ex had done. Begged her to take him back after he had been cheating on her. She had told him to his face to go blow himself.

She didn't think Andy would do that, but you could never tell what somebody was going to do when they wanted a different outcome from the one you were giving them.

It was warm with a slightly chilly undertone. She was wearing a lightweight jacket and pulled the collar together. This was a quiet area, and she walked round into her own street but didn't see any cars parked near her driveway.

She felt foolish. Whatever Andy was, he wasn't some obsessive stalker.

She heard the slightest brush of a shoe on the pavement behind her. Her heart bumped up a gear and she started to turn round just before something hit her hard on the head and she collapsed to the ground.

Then the feet started kicking her, and a boot caught her in the face. All she saw was a figure standing over her before blackness took over.
